I'll have cool Belly Dance Art, tees, tanks, DVD's and more for sale there!

I'm excited by these casual events that encourage "just dancing", fun and friendship! :)

WVU Belly Dance Club December 5th Hafla

Host:
Type:
Party -
Network:
Global
Date:
Saturday, December 5, 2009
Time:
6:30pm - 10:00pm
Location:
WVU Creative Arts Center Falbo Theater

Description

We are having a very casual hafla Dec. 5th at the WVU Creative Arts Center Falbo theater.

We set up at 6:30 (we'll need volunteers to set up) and have it until 10:00pm. We'll also need volunteers to help put everything back starting about 9:30. Please also take your food, etc. home. :)

No need to wear a costume, but if you feel like it, go for it! :)

It is free! No performances, just open floor dancing, music, snacks if people bring 'em, some costumes etc. for sale/swap, friends to dance with, big fun! :)

We'll have a very short (about 15 minutes) business meeting for the club instead of having a separate December meeting. It will begin after set up around 6:50pm. Remember, the club is open to the community! :)

Take a study/shopping break and be more efficient afterwards! Hope you can join us! Please send friends this invitation!

Directions: take WVU exit off I79. From the N turn left at end of exit, from S turn Right at end of exit. Go through light with signs for Target, Barnes and Noble, etc (University town Center), go through light at Sheets, go through light at CVS, go through light at Coliseum (on right, looks like a cupcake) and get in left lane. Turn left from left turn lane. Creative Arts Center is on the left and you can park in the parking lot out front.

If for some reason it is full (it shouldn't be) you can go back to light/intersection where the Coliseum will be on the left now and turn right onto Patteson. Take the first right and that parking lot is behind the CAC.

To get to the Falbo, when facing the CAC, take the sidewalk going right all the way to the end, past the big giant head statue (with horns). Take the stairs to the left at the split and go all the way to the bottom. There will be a sign pointing towards the Falbo. It goes down around the corner and the Falbo will be on the left.

Upcoming Super casual Haflas (Belly Dance Parties)

tonight at the wvu belly dance club meeting, we talked about a possible super low key Halloween hafla (party). Maybe some performances, definitely some party dancing, come in costume (Halloween, belly dance, or the super best- combination of the two) if you like. we'd reserve a university room so it would be free. October 23rd through October 25th are good possibilities. I suggest picking either the 23rd, a friday or the 25th, a sunday so it doesn't interfere with any other plans you may have leading up to the best holiday ever. (IMHO, of course ;-) )

Also, we need to know know what Sunday afternoon is good for people to get together for a super casual belly dance picnic at Chestnut Ridge Park (off the Cooper's Rock exit). We're hoping this will be free, and to just show up at the park with blankets, a dish to share, music (hopefully by drummer, but if not, by boom box), and ourselves in costume or pieces of costume and casual clothes, or pajamas, or any combination of these. We're thinking we'd show up around 3:30 and stay until 7 at the latest (that's when the park's day facilities are available until). It's going to be really low key; just hanging out and belly dancing as we feel like it. I have to check out more details with the park, but we can probably just plop down our blankets and do our thing. There are playgrounds throughout the park and this is intended to be family friendly. Don't worry about a baby sitter. Bring the family and have fun! It's not too many hours in the day, so if you have laundry or studying to do, there are plenty more hours to get that taken care of. Obviously, we want it to be fairly soon so we aren't cold out there. :)

Next Beginner's Belly Dance class

People have been asking about when the next beginner's belly dance class will start, so, here's the info:

Belly Dance is such wonderful exercise- especially since it is so fun and stress relieving that it doesn't really seem like exercise, but strengthens the whole body while adding aerobic activity and flexibility. We start each class with a yoga warm up and end with a yoga cool down too.

I'll be starting new Beginner Belly Dance classes September 8th and the 6 week session will run through October 13th. Classes will be held on Tuesday nights 7:00 - 8:00 PM. The class will be through the WVU Community Arts Program. It will be held in room 426A in the WVU Creative Arts Center, a brand new studio with a beautiful view. Cost of the class will be $60. Students register through the WVU Community Arts Program - visit the website at http://communityarts.wvu.edu for class and registration information, including a registration form, policies and teacher bios. Students can register by mail (Community Arts Program/West Virginia University/401A College of Creative Arts/Morgantown WV 26506-6111), fax (293-7491) or in person (room 401 A at the Creative Arts Center).

For registration
questions, please email CommunityArts@mail.wvu.edu or call 304-293-4841 x3168.

I will have another fall/winter session following this one, info TBA. I will have another session through the WVU CAP starting in February (possibly another immediately following that one) and a summer session also through WVU CAP.

Great Belly Dance class tonight!

Tonight's Beginner class at E. Moore Hall was great! The energy was up and attendance is still high. It was such a beautiful day and it was still light when I arrived. I'm so happy to be teaching in such a beautiful studio and to have such a big class that is so positive. I hope everyone has a good break next week for Spring Break.  this class has gone by so quickly! I can't believe there are only 2 more classes left in this session!

No Continuing Belly Dance class next week either. We're headed to Baltimore for Cirque!! Then to the zoo/aquarium.

Hopes and Dreams

Hola!
I'll fill out my profile shortly, but I thought I'd introduce myself. I started belly dancing in 1993 and practicing yoga shortly after. I got my Masters in Occupational Therapy and my specialty was in pediatrics, though I've also worked in Rehab and in Nursing homes. I quit my full time OT job when symptoms from Hashimoto's disease rendered me poorly functional. I went professional as a belly dancer since it gave me energy rather than draining it. My husband I were married in 2000. We were lucky enough to get two lab-shepard-husky-rotti mix pups about 4 1/2 years ago when my sister's dog had puppies (that's Dana in the picture.) The showed us how to love unconditionally and prepped us for the biggest job we'd ever know: parenting! We were blessed with a beautiful boy, Angelo (also in the picture), in 2007. When one of our dogs, Tara, was killed when a mountain lion came up on our porch, we were devastated, completely traumatized. We experienced our greatest joy and our deepest pain all within 9 months! I got my Reiki II attunement shortly after she died. It was absolutely necessary for healing not only myself, but the whole family. I got my Reiki I for the dogs and baby in the first place. I'll never stop missing her, but we have "settled" into a new normal. I teach a couple bellydance classes a week and perform. I'll be going to at least one workshop a month until June and then am sponsoring one myself!! (will post more on that later...)

I'd been thinking for some time that I should start a blog for several reasons: I wanted to share certain experiences that might help other people (especially pregnancy, vegetarianism, belly dance, natural parenting, yoga, Reiki) to share my development in the mixed media/collage/shrine arts (because all humans are artists and should be encouraged to be artistic), keep people posted on my belly dance happenings and my thoughts on belly dance topics, to share my efforts to live green and inspire others to be environmentally friendly... I'm sure I will have more things to discuss here, but that's a start.  I have to say that there was "universal intervention" in getting me to finally get this started. I'd thought about it for a while and was also meant to search the web for Moms who did arts/crafts so I could get ideas for how they fit all that in. Then I got my most recent issue of Mothering magazine featuring 5 crafty Moms who have multiple kids, cook from scratch, sew for the home and family, craft, and blog all about it. some even home school their kids and managed to write books!  That was the inspiration I needed! So here we are!
